Dr. Whit Woodard

Teacher

Dr. Whit Woodard was ordained into ministry by Grace Baptist Church in Sonoma, CA in 1966 after study at Western Baptist Bible College in El Cerrito, CA. While in school, Whit worked as a police officer in Richmond, CA.

In his early ministry he was engaged as Western Representative for the Youth Commission of the International Council of Christian Churches, and subsequently served as General Secretary for the American Council of Christian Churches of California. For ten years he was a church planter with the Fellowship of Baptists For Home Missions in California.

Whit engaged in chaplaincy with the United States Air Force Auxiliary, CAP for many years and in 2008 was appointed Chief of Chaplains for the CAP Chaplain’s Corps (the largest all-volunteer chaplaincy in the world), and promoted to the grade of Colonel. In this capacity he also participated in the USAF Chaplain Corps Executive Council, reporting directly to the Air Force Chief of Chaplains. During the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan Whit provided chaplain services for two Army units while their chaplains were deployed. He was elected to serve a three year term on the Executive Committee of the Military Chaplains Association of the USA.

After planting his last church in the mountains of Northern California, Whit drew on his police and ministry experience accepting an appointment as a police chaplain, serving 10 years for a County agency serving 10 agencies and for 23 years at the Rocklin, CA Police Department. He earned the Master Chaplain certification through the International Conference of Police Chaplains in 2001. He is endorsed by the Chaplain’s Commission of the GARBC. During this time he supported his ministry by teaching workshops in eight community colleges for over 20 years.

Whit received his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Great Plains Baptist Divinity School.

In 2011 Whit published a textbook on chaplaincy (The Ministry of Presence) that has been widely accepted and has been employed by some seminaries in their Master of Divinity programs for chaplaincy.

For many years Whit and his wife Nancy (a graduate of Bob Jones University) were active in ministry at Sierra Baptist Church in Newcastle, CA including a two plus year interim pastoral ministry and was active in the California Association of Regular Baptist Churches, serving on the Council for No. California and the State Association. In 2020, Whit and his wife Nancy relocated to Leesburg, Florida and are now members of Tri-County Baptist Church in Lady Lake.
